Clarity

Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to intense heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called “inclusions” and external characteristics called “blemishes”.

Some common inclusions range from pinpoints, clouds, crystals, and feathers.

The Clarity scale consists of 6 categories, some of which are divided into 11 specific grades.

Clarity

Flawless

No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare.

Internally Flawless

No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare.

VVS1, VVS2 Very Very Slight Included. Inclusions are so slight they are difficult to see under 10x magnification by a skilled grader.
VS1, VS2 Very Slightly Included. Inclusions are considered minor and still regarded as “clean”. They can be observed under 10x magnification with some effort.
SI1, S2 Slightly Included. Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification and can be difficult to spot with the naked eye.
I1, I2, I3 Included. Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and apparent to the naked eye. They may have an effect on transparency and brilliance.
