Cut

A diamond’s famous sparkle is due to their ability to transmit light and reflect it back to the viewer. Not to be confused by shape (round, oval, cushion), their cut grade is what determines how well its facets interact with light.

Precise workmanship is required to cut a diamond so its proportions, symmetry, and polish maximizes the amount of light that returns.

Rounds Brilliant diamonds have particular Cut grades of: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. While GIA does not grade Fancy Shaped diamonds such as ovals, cushions, and pear with a cut grade, there are ideal proportions buyers should still look for.

Brightness – refers to how bright a diamond appears by how white light is reflected back. Poorly cut diamonds appear dark.

Fire – refers to the scattering of white light into colors of the rainbow.

Scintillation – refers to the amount of sparkle a diamond emits.

We recommend selecting the highest cut grade possible within your budget. Out of the 4C’s, cut grade has the greatest influence on a diamond’s appearance.
